Four centuries of heritage

17th century

The king’s carriages

The name originates near the Louvre. Royal coachmen stored their carriages in “remises” (coach houses), and the finest vehicles earned access to the “Grande Remise.” In 1640, Nicolas Sauvage launched the first carriage-for-hire service in Paris.

19th century

The golden age of prestige transport

Day hire, free-set fares, prestige vehicles: grande remise carriages set themselves apart from common cabs through bespoke service and discretion. A distinct status that even imperial transport companies could not absorb.

1955

Modern regulation

Decree n°55-96 officially defined grande remise vehicles. Prefectural licences, mandatory prestige vehicles, trained chauffeurs: the profession gained structure without losing its identity.

2009

The VTC transformation

The law of 22 July 2009 folded the Grande Remise into the VTC (private hire vehicle) framework. The market deregulated, but the ethos endures among operators who carry this tradition of excellence forward.

Discretion — A premium chauffeur is invisible when needed, available when called upon.

Vehicle excellence — Prestige sedans and limousines maintained to standards that go well beyond a routine inspection.

Bespoke service — Every engagement is defined in advance. Agreed pricing, tailored routing, attention to detail.

Expertise — Trained chauffeurs who know Paris intimately, equally at ease managing a diplomatic protocol or a private tour.
